FOREVER PLAID - Thousand Islands Playhouse

Get your feet tapping with the witty musical comedy revue about the love of music and coming of age. Featuring the tight harmonies of hit 50s songs such as Heart & Soul, Chain Gang, and Catch A Falling Star, Forever Plaid has been the #1 Off-Broadway show for two decades.

Once upon a time, there were four guys (Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie) who loved to sing. They all met in high school when they joined the Audiovisual Club. Discovering they shared an affection for music and entertaining, they got together and dreamed of becoming like their idols, the Four Aces, the Four Lads, the Four Freshmen, the Hi-los and the Crew Cuts. They rehearsed in the basement of Smudge's family's plumbing supply company. It was there they became Forever Plaid, a name that connects traditional values of family, home and harmony.

The Thousand Islands Playhouse has been running for 29 seasons and now operates two fully-renovated historic venues on the bank of the St. Lawrence River in Gananoque, Ontario. The Playhouse is a major contributor to the development of new Canadian works and has produced 24 world premieres. The company was founded by Artistic Director Greg Wanless.

"Terrific! Exhilarating stuff. Great fun. The happiest show in town." - Dennis Cunningham, CBS $60 - $45 Sunday, October 24 2010 2:00 pm

One of the great things about seeing Blue Man Group is that it appeals to all ages. Kids will enjoy the lights, color and spectacle. Adults enjoy the humor, social commentary and depth of the character. Even the hardened theatre critic finds a deeper message behind the fun and mess.
While the show appeals to a wide audience, it may not be appropriate for very small children.

How long does it take a Blue Man to prepare before the show? What is the make-up the Blue Men put on their faces?

It takes a Blue Man approximately one hour to get in costume for the show. The Blue Men wear grease paint on their heads. It never dries.
EMMA-LEE

Celebrate Valentine's Day early and join us for a romantic evening of swingin' jazz, 50s pop, and bossa nova all with the vocals of emerging singer songwriter Emma-Lee. Winner of a 2010 Independent Music Award in the Best Love Song category for "Until We Meet Again" Emma will share her songs from the heart.

Saucy and sweet, pensive and pure, Emma-Lee's debut album, Never Just A Dream, offers a candid peek inside the romantic heart. The emerging Toronto-based jazz performer sings a collection of songs inspired by the sort of heartache that is universal to anyone who has lived a life worth living. Her live show is known for an intimate, off the cuff charm that creates a special bond with the audience.

Her weakness for a great pop melody turns out to be one of her greatest strengths; on her debut album spectres of AM oldies radio mingle effortlessly with childhood influences like Joni Mitchell and jazz great Ella Fitzgerald, creating a hauntingly beautiful musical landscape at once complex and yet familiar.

While preparing and creating the album Emma-Lee was stricken not once but twice by any singer's worst nightmare; the need for throat surgery. In spite of these obstacles, Emma-Lee continued to follow her dreams and it's that kind of dedication and unwavering faith that sets her apart. Her skill, patience and incredible business savvy mark her as a rare artist of foresight and uncompromising vision.

"Lots of jazzy vocalists can sing nice, comfortable music, but not many play with the conventions creatively, which is where she shines." - NOW Magazine $40 - $25 Friday, February 11 2011 8:00 pm

MOULIN ROUGE THE BALLET- Royal Winnipeg Ballet

The most renowned cabaret in history has it all kicklines, pinwheels, and of course, the Diamond Dog Dancers. This classical ballet production, performed by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet tells the story of young Matthew and Nathalie as they tempt the fates to find love at the infamous Moulin Rouge.

The Moulin Rouge has been the subject of many books, paintings, movies and musicals - birthplace of the Quadrille, the Cancan and home to a cast of outrageous dancers known as the Diamond Dogs. When the Moulin opened, Paris was a city of exquisite contradiction; art was both elevated and abused, pomp and excess ran hand in hand with poverty and hardship, and the heady elixir of personal freedom bred lifestyles that were often reckless and addictive.

This production features the classical music of several composers, including Chopin and Debussy, as well as the music of Piazzola and Quarteto Gelato. The high-energy dancing, vibrant 1890s Paris inspired costumes and lavish sets make this a truly unique ballet experience.

Having celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2009, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet holds the double distinction of being Canada's premier ballet company and the longest continuously operating ballet company in North America. The company began to tour Canada in 1945 and now spends 20 or more weeks a year on the road touring all across the globe.

"jewel box of sumptuous dancing...at every moment, the energy radiating from the stage is palpable." - The Vancouver Sun $110 - $70 Monday, February 14 2011 8:00 pm

TOWER OF POWER

For over 40 years, Tower of Power has been creating its own kind of soul music melding jazz, funk, rock and soul into an exhilarating, high energy show you won't soon forget. Led by super saxophonist Emilio Castrillo, their unique urban soul music combined with outstanding lead vocalist Larry Braggs makes this one of the most dynamic groups of musicians to ever hit the stage!

Tower of Power's journey began in July 1968 when Emilio Castillo met Stephen "Doc" Kupka in Oakland, California. When Doc auditioned during a band rehearsal at Emilio's house, Emilio's father called him into the kitchen and offered the following advice: "Hire that guy, he's got something." Doc and his signature baritone sax sound were now in the band, and on August 13, 1968, Tower of Power, as we know them today, began playing gigs, and soon became very well known in the area.

Tower celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2008 at a very special reunion show at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. With Mic Gillete rejoining the band in August of 2009, there are now 5 original members in the current lineup. Their dedication to the music, their creative writing, and their original vision still guides Tower of Power.

"Tower Of Power is a veteran band that frequently breathes new life into the overworked soul-dance-riff genre." - Rollingstone Magazine $75 - $45 Tuesday, April 5 2011 8:00 pm

SHO, MO & THE MONKEY BUNCH

Sho, Mo and the Monkey Bunch is for parents who love music - and want their kids to do the same! This high-energy show, full of humour and a variety of music, including honky-tonk, nursery rhymes and rock 'n' roll, will have kids going bananas while learning to care for themselves, their friends and their environment.

Shoshana Sperling (Sho) and Maury LaFoy (Mo) came together to create a CD for the children in their family and soon they were overwhelmed with requests for copies of their new creation. They began to write songs using the musical stylings and humour of artists such as Louie Armstrong, Steve Martin, Shirley Temple and Canada's own Sarah McLachlan.

Each song performed by Sho, Mo and the Monkey Bunch pays tribute to a different style of music and uses humour to both entertain and involve the audience. Along with Maury LaFoy (Mo), the musical Monkey Bunch also includes Graham Powell and Lyle Molzan, all of whom are members of Jann Arden's band.

"hilariously fabulous local performer Shoshana Sperling and her partner in crime, the Supers' Maury LaFoy, have done the impossible: created a kids' album that's actually great." - NOW Magazine
